Biolumen Learning blog: What to really expect

Dearest gentle reader (sorry I couldn’t help it),

Welcome to the blog of Dr. Joel Brame, founder of Biolumen Learning. What can you expect from this blog? To start, I will be sharing insights within the world of learning design, biological sciences, and the neuroscience of learning. Further, you will find a more personal, less formal touch in the blog (beginning with a large bird on my head). I will share stories, random musings and theories, and my personal input into matters, especially matters that will have a wider range of effects in the world of instructional design.

I come from a family of teachers and lawyers. That’s it. Everybody. I had a choice. With apparently zero natural drive to become a lawyer, much to my father’s chagrin, I went into education. Since then I have tutored, taught F2F, taught online, given countless workshops and seminar presentations to audiences from 3 to 250 people, trained workplace team members, trained lab techniques for three insitutions, trained in compliance requirements, developed infographic and posters and slide packs and modules and websites and podcasts and blogs, created several workbooks, co-written 10 articles published in high-caliber journals, and written 1.5 books (one of them is not yet published). Perhaps it’s fair to say I have a passion for education? Maybe obsession is a better word.

But my goal here is to talk about how things are now, and bring in historical perspective where it suits. Even though I grew up with 2400 baud modems and the elite pentium chips and the endless changes along the way, I still love keeping up with technologies. Currently I am enjoying learning how to stack genAIs and how machine learning can facilitate adaptive learning.

I have also learned and taught about the human body from almost every angle. Anatomy, physiology, microbiome, pathology, genetics, psychology and more. While I can serve as an SME in these areas, my greatest passion is in education and training. For me, helping organisations and individuals create educational and training programs that effectively achieve their goals is one of the greatest rewards.

And in case you’re still wondering, the beautiful macaw is a resident of Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World in Queensland. The birds are free-flying in the giant netted area, and if you’re comfortable with birds, you can walk through the area and visit with the residents up close.
